François Nony's superb Château Labat gets our vote for best buy of the vintage — it's just so rare to find such a beautifully structured, long-lived claret at such a good price. His family has made juicy,
Merlot-rich wines at this estate since 1900, just a stone's throw from the legendary estates of Saint-
Julien, from vines planted long ago on the same top quality, gravel soils.
"Dense red, fine purity of fruit over good oak, both fleshy and firm, quite exciting modern Médoc. Drink
2013-18. (16+points)." Steven Spurrier, Decanter magazine

"Run by the Cordier family, with the vineyard managed by Alfred Tesseron's team at Pontet-Canet, this
is the first vintage from their biodynamically farmed estate, and it is certainly the best wine I have
ever tasted from Senejac. A blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet
Franc and Petit Verdot, oodles of black currant fruit are intermixed with some licorice, underbrush, and
foresty notes. Great fruit, a sumptuous, fleshy texture, and plenty of succulence and length make for a
big, rich, nicely textured wine to drink over the next decade." Robert Parker

"The opposite style (as always) of Barsac than Doisy-Daëne, slightly less pale, heavier pear and apricot
aromas, rounder, more oily texture, great length too, less harmonious finish but great stuff for the
ageing. " Steven Spurrier, Decanter magazine
"This is comparatively timid on the nose, giving very little away at the moment despite rigorous coaxing.
But the palate is very promising, very well balanced, very focused with a fine citrus attack on the
entry, fanning out towards an apricot, white peach and lime tinged finish that shows a great deal of
unctuous honeyed fruit on the finish. This is an exuberant Doisy-Vedrines that yearns to offer pleasure"
Neil Martin, The Wine Advocate
"Shows lots of lemon pie and almond spice, with hints of bitter lemon. Full-bodied, with a nutmeg and
honey finish. Racy." James Suckling, Wine Spectator

"This is typically one of the finest offerings of Fronsac, but I am not convinced the 2009 will eclipse
their magnificent 2005, although it will certainly give the latter wine a run for its money. The opaque
purple-hued 2009 offers a beautiful aromatic display of camphor, blueberries, acacia flowers, raspberries,
and crushed rocks. Full-bodied and pure with a nicely layered texture, the vintage's unctuosity
and thickness as well as freshness and definition, this sleeper of the vintage is another beauty from La
Vieille Cure. It should drink well for 15+ years" Robert Parker

"This blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with the Cabernet dominating, looks to be the best
they have ever produced, even eclipsing the 2005. Dense purple in color, with extraordinarily elegant
floral notes intermixed with raspberry, black currant, cherry, and spice box, it is medium to full-bodied,
not massive, but again, very seamless, with beautiful precision, sweet tannins, and an endearing fleshiness
and depth of flavor that are neither heavy nor fatiguing. This wine will be relatively approachable

"There have been many great Glorias over the years as this property consistently over-performs. The
2009 may be the finest yet produced. Loaded with notes of Christmas fruitcake intermixed with red
and black currants, licorice, spice box, and blackberries, this inky/purple-colored wine is atypically fullbodied
with a viscous texture, and loads of tannin, extract, and richness. Deep and layered, it will offer
thrilling sipping over the next 25+ years. (Bottles of the 1982 I own are fully mature, but are not close

"The greatest La Dominique since the 1989 and 1990, the 2009 was fashioned by the brilliant duo of Jean-Philippe Fort (Michel Rolland's top lieutenant) and Jean-Luc Thunevin (the bad boy of St.-Emilion). Made from 100% Merlot (which must be a "first" for this estate), and with 14.3% alcohol, this will be a thrilling wine to drink over the next 20-25 years. Dense purple-hued with loads of black raspberries, black cherries, truffles, earth, and spice, it is an opulent, viscous effort with extraordinary intensity, purity, and richness, and a superb finish of nearly 45 seconds. It will be drinkable young, yet is capable of lasting a long time."Robert Parker

"Beautiful floral-infused black fruits jump from the glass of this opaque ruby/purple-colored wine. Possibly richer, denser, and even more complete than the brilliant 2005 (although it is still too early to say that definitively), this is certainly a more opulent, succulent style of wine than even the 2005, which had surprising flesh for a wine from that vintage. The Right Bank consultant Stephane Derenoncourt has performed some magic here, as recent vintages attest, and the wines are often fairly priced as well. This full-bodied Prieure-Lichine should drink well for 20-25 years."Robert Parker

"I don't think anyone could possibly rate this higher than the 2005, which is certainly the greatest wine made at this estate since 1982. However, this is another blockbuster, gorgeously aromatic, with notes of subtle oak interwoven with perfumed black, blue, and red fruits. Its opaque purple color, the gorgeous elegance allied to compelling intensity of flavor, and its full-bodied opulence make for the quintessential expression of this terroir. This is beauty that will be relatively approachable in 3-4 years and evolve for 20 or more years. (Tasted three times.)" Robert Parker
"Floral and precise fruit, with blackberry-skin character and mineral undertones. Full-bodied, with superfine tannins and a fresh, clean finish. Long and tight. Racy. It reveals an opaque plum/garnet/purple color as well as knock-out aromas of black fruits, cedar, incense, licorice, and a Provencal garrigue-like character. The dense purple color offers up notes of white chocolate, blueberry, blackberry, crushed rock, and white flowers. Pichon Baron is not only one of the most beautiful (and photographed) châteaux in Bordeaux — its Grand Vin is also one of the leading "super seconds', that top tier of second growth wines whose quality approaches (and occasionally surpasses) the legendary first growths, like Latour — whose vineyards border those of Pichon Baron.
"An inky/blue/purple color is followed by aromas and flavors of incense, flowery black currants, and subtle smoke and oak. This full-bodied 2009, which exhibits wonderful intensity, purity, and length, is an exceptional effort, but in this vintage it must take a back seat to some of its peers, such as Pichon Lalande, Pontet-Canet and Lynch Bages, not to mention all the first-growths. Nevertheless, it is a beautiful wine that should drink well for 30+ years." Robert Parker

"Now that La Conseillante is making a second wine with more severe selection, think of the 2009 as a version of the 2000 on steroids. This is never going to be a blockbuster wine, because the terroir just seems to produce silky, elegant wines, but in this case, the 2009 has an extra kick and level of concentration that is unprecedented. Inky bluish purple, with an extraordinary nose of framboise, black raspberries, spring flowers, spice box, and a hint of truffle, the wine has great depth, full-bodied opulence, silky tannins, enormous power and richness, but again, a vibrancy and uplift that are just freakish in this vintage. That's one of the great hallmarks of 2009 and one that will always stand out over the next 30 years. This wine should be drinkable in 5-7 years and last 40 or more." Robert Parker

"The 2009 Latour has off the charts concentration ... Possibly a 100-year wine, it boasts an inky/black/purple color as well as an extraordinary perfume of super-intense blue and black fruits, graphite, and a liqueur of rocks-like minerality. Enormously full-bodied yet at the same time incredibly fresh, vibrant, and precise, it coats the mouth, and builds incrementally to skyscraper-like texture, and a whopping finish that lasts over a minute ... A monumental wine from a monumental vintage in the Médoc, this is our children's children's children's elixir." Robert Parker
"This is incredibly floral on the nose, with violet and lilac as well as dark and ripe raspberry and blueberry. Full-bodied, with a dense and incredibly rich palate yet held back and in reserve. Such precision and beauty. It lasts for minutes on the palate. This reminds me of the 1990, but better made and better raised. It is really the style of Latour, where the tannins grab you at the end. This will most likely be a perfect wine." James Suckling, Wine Spectator
Why buy Bordeaux Futures?
What is meant by "futures'?
Buying "futures' means reserving top vintages before they are bottled (sometimes referred to as "pre-release' or "en primeur' buying). By paying "up front', you reserve wine while it is still in the barrel, months before official release.
The advantages of "futures" buying
Demand for fine wines is always high as there simply isn't enough to go around. With Bordeaux 2009, worldwide demand looks set to hit new levels. Buying "futures' guarantees you an allocation of the wines you want at the best possible prices. If past great vintages are anything to go by, once these wines hit the market the prices will rise (and rise).
"I believe we had a taste of magic in a glass É"
The verdict of our Bordeaux specialist Clare Tooley, who spent a week, with the rest of the WSJwine buying team, touring the region and tasting extensively. As Clare reports, expectations could not have been higher going into the annual Bordeaux tasting week. The Bordelais have spent the last few months telling anyone who"d care to listen just what a perfect vintage 2009 had been, it could so easily have all been a bit of a let down.
Thankfully the wines themselves most definitely stood up to the billing, the mood amongst the massed ranks of the world's wine trade was a mixture of relief and growing excitement, the consensus is that 2009 will go down as one of the greats.
It is hard not to sound like a cliché as these wines are simply sublime, richly textured with generous fruit, beautifully balanced acid and tannin, intense and concentrated yet elegant.
The really great news for Bordeaux lovers is that the quality of the vintage shone through across the region with many of the "lesser" wines really singing, there is real quality to be had whatever the budget.
