Flavor Profile
Gran Reservas epitomize classic Rioja. Famed for their extended aging period (at least two years in oak and three in bottle) and resulting characteristics – elegant, mellow, and filled with smooth flavors of earthy spice – they’re released at their delicious peaks.
This rare, limited-edition version one comes from the officially ‘very good’ 2012 vintage (given 90 Wine Spectator points for producing “powerful wines”). The winemakers? None other than father-son team, Julián and Javier Murúa – the men behind our best-selling regular Riojas.
Their luxurious Gran Reserva is made from ancient Tempranillo vines, planted on the highest slopes of the family’s perfectly positioned, terraced vineyards. These old plots yield grapes of complex flavors – but only after years of patience (and back-breaking labor). That’s what makes the modest price tag all the more amazing.
After 30 months in barrel and three years in bottle, Barón de Barbón Gran Reserva is beautifully mature and drinking deliciously. Look forward to vibrant plum and berry fruit flavors with an earthy truffle and nutmeg complexity and lingering finish. A perfect partner for roasted lamb, smoked cheeses, and more.
The Murúas only crafted tiny amounts of this exceptional red, so please don’t delay your order.
