      Wine FAQs

      What is Riesling Wine?

Riesling wine is a light- to medium-bodied white wine made by the Riesling grape. While most associated with its native home of Germany, Riesling wine is made worldwide, and is produced in a range of styles, loved for their lively acidity, ageability and versatility with food.

      How to Pronounce "Riesling"?

      Pronounce "Riesling" as "REES-ling."

      Where is Riesling Grape Grown?

Germany’s flagship white wine grape, Riesling is native to the Rhine region, and is grown widely throughout the country. It also thrives in cooler climates worldwide. Neighboring Germany, Austria and Alsace, France are two places that grow and vinify iconic, delicious Rieslings. Areas of Australia, New Zealand and North America also create Riesling wines worth seeking out.

Is Riesling Wine Dry or Sweet?

Riesling wine can be bone dry, super sweet or somewhere in between. That's one of the reasons it's so delicious and interesting!

What is Riesling Wine's Style and Character?

Riesling wine is incredibly versatile, and is available widely in a range of styles, depending on where and how its made, and the winemaker’s taste. Riesling wines can be crisp, refreshing and light bodied, or plush and medium bodied, with prominent fruit flavors. They can also be dry or sweet—or somewhere in between—and still or sparkling.

Regardless of a Riesling’s style, it will always have high acidity and pronounced aromatic characteristics, and will almost always have excellent aging potential.

What Does Riesling Wine Taste Like?

Riesling wine can have an enormous range of flavors, depending on the ripeness of its grapes, where and how it’s made, the winemaker’s intent and how long it’s been aged. High in acid, Riesling wine can have fruit flavors like lemon and lime, green apple and pear, pineapple, and apricot and nectarine. It can also have notes of white flowers, minerals, honey, beeswax and petrol, and can be dry or sweet, or just seem sweet because of pronounced fruit flavors.

How to Pick the Best Riesling Wine

Which wine is the “best” Riesling wine will always be a matter of personal taste. However, because Riesling is available in so many different styles, finding the best Riesling for you can certainly be difficult.

One way to find a Riesling you’ll love is to consider where and when it was made. Though definitely not a hard rule, cooler climate Riesling may be more lean, crisp and easy-drinking, while warm climate Riesling may offer more prominent fruit flavors. Older Riesling wines may also have more honeyed or petrol characteristics.

The amount of alcohol in a Riesling may also help you figure out how it will taste. While not always true, Rieslings that are lower in alcohol (around 8% or 9% abv), may be sweeter.

If you are looking for a German Riesling you’ll enjoy, you’re in luck: Helpfully, German Rieslings will be classified and labeled by their level of sweetness, which can sometimes indicate their flavor profile. Typically, the sweeter the Riesling, the higher chance it’ll present fruitful or honeyed flavors. Drier Rieslings, meanwhile, may be leaner and brighter, and taste more mineral.

Listed from driest to the sweetest German classification, these are the words to look for on a German label: kabinett, spätlese, auslese, beerenauslese and trockenbeerenauslese. A German Riesling may also be labeled “trocken” if it is dry.

What Foods Pair Well with Riesling Wine?

Because Riesling is high in acid and can be found in a range of flavors, it’s exceptionally food friendly across the board. Dry Riesling plays well with just about any light- to mid-weight dish, from teamed and roasted vegetables, to cheese and crackers, to eggs cooked any way, to chicken, salmon, pork and beyond. However, it’s an especially ideal pairing for seafood of all types—even sushi. Almost as versatile as dry Riesling, sweet Riesling is delicious with spicy dishes and salty or cured meats, as its sweetness can help to tame heat and counter salt, and meals with complex seasonings, like Indian curries. Sweet Riesling can also be excellent when served with desserts, just make the wine in your glass is as sweet or sweeter than the treat on your plate.

Riesling, like any white wine, is meant to be enjoyed chilled. Aim to serve the wine around 45-55°F. If you'd like to enhance your wine's acidity, err on the lower end of the temperature spectrum. To bring out the Riesling's fruit and floral flavors, serve it a few degrees warmer.

Any all-purpose wine glass or white wine glass will suit Riesling well.
