Beyond the Label

In Herxheim am Berg, one of the highest elevation villages along the official wine route in Pfalz, Germany, the Gabel family has been farming vines and making wine since 1655. So it’s safe to say, they know a thing or two about making some seriously delicious juice. Gabel Goldberg Riesling is a perfect example of what they can do: Balanced and bright, it offers rounded orchard fruit tones along a mineral backbone.

Since 2008, brother and sister Oliver and Lisa Gabel (the 13th generation of the fam) have been leading the estate in an increasingly sustainable direction, farming organically since the twenty-tens and intervening less in the cellar whenever they can. This wine is made with Riesling from a single site—the Goldberg vineyard—grown on limestone soils in the northern part of the Pfalz.

The vines here are between 30 and 40 years old, and produce absolutely stellar fruit. Oliver and Lisa want to preserve their quality, so they pick everything by hand and press the grapes just gently. The resulting juice is fermented spontaneously (i.e. with native yeasts already present on the fruit) in large wooden barrels, and to ensure a soft, plush mouthfeel, the wine is kept on its lees until the following summer.

The final wine is immediately enticing, with white peach, lemon peel and apple aromas leaping from the glass. On the palate, similar flavors layer with stony notes for an ultimately cool, refreshing sip.

This really is Riesling at its very best. Hurry to secure your share while stocks last.
