Flavor Profile
When it comes to the most recognizable of France’s luxury wines, famed Châteauneuf-du-Pape gets all the fanfare (and commands the highest prices) in the Rhône Valley. But, savvy fans of these sumptuous wines know to look east, where tiny Vacqueyras produces equally fabulous, and more wallet-friendly, reds.
The Arnoux family are one of the original Vacqueyras families, and have been making wine in the village since 1717. Their ‘Les Penitents’ cuvée is a classic blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre, and really shows off the gloriously ripe 2017 vintage.
After tasting the previous release, Wine Advocate critic Joe Czerwinski rated it 92 points and said that it “stood out in my blind tasting of the appellation” with “plenty of ripe raspberry and blackberry fruit” and a “long finish.” And Vinous expert Josh Raynolds gave it 91-93 points, calling it “sexy and deeply perfumed.” The equally impressive 2017 edition is sure to win its own admirers.
One of our highest recommendations for Rhône fans (or anyone who loves the richest of reds). Get some on your table today.
