Every year, fifth-generation winemaker Scipione Giuliani scours the vineyards of Italy in search of the ideal grapes to use in his Il Papavero red blend. This versatile red reminds us of an authentic house wine you'd find at a trattoria in Italy. Delicious with or without food, it pairs effortlessly with a range of classic Italian dishes. As wine critic Richard Neill once wrote, "If all table wines tasted this good, no one would leave the table!" The value is second to none, and as you can already guess, it's ideal for weeknights and parties. The secret? Scipione selects the ripest, most flavorsome grapes from the top-performing regions to ensure Il Papavero is always supple with red berry fruit. Sangiovese from the Marches or Emilia-Romagna, Montepulciano from the Abruzzo, plus Negroamaro and Nero d’Avola from Puglia and the south—a perfect combination. When you pour a glass of Il Papavero, you’ll be greeted by its deep ruby color, along with its fresh red cherry, black cherry and spice aromas. It hails from Cantine Due Palme, a winemaking cooperative with loads of awards to its name, including Gambero Rosso’s Cooperative Cellar of the Year in both 2021 and 2023. It was founded by three-time Vinitaly Winemaker of the Year Angelo Maci (below) in 1989. Nowadays, his daughter Melissa is President, while his grandson Francesco assists the new head winemaker, Vincenzo Campanella, in the cellar. Primitivo, a cousin of California’s fruit-packed Zinfandel, is the godfather of southern Italian grapes. Puglia’s treasured Nero di Troia grape is steeped in legend. This expression from the super-talented Andrea Bernardini is deep, dark and full of southern Italian warmth. Sporting a long history of acclaim, it’s also a winner with pastas or red meats.

Made by the talented Andrea Bernardini, Corsiero Nero is a bold and dark-fruited, glass-staining red crafted from select parcels of rare Nero di Troia grapes grown in the foothills of the Apennines in Puglia. The unusual grape variety takes its name from the nearby town of Troia, which, as legend has it, was founded by Greek hero Diomedes after sacking the city of Troy in Asia Minor. Even great warriors eventually turn to more gentle pursuits, and maybe it was Nero di Troia which made Diomedes settle in Italy, using his last years to make wine from this fascinating grape variety. Italian for ‘Black Charger’ (like the trusty steed on the label), Corsiero Nero was aged three months in fine French oak and lives up to its valiant name. From your very first sip, you’ll see why this beauty boasts a long history of acclaim. Enchanting aromas of blackberry, violet, smoky vanilla and oak smooth out into similar flavors across a long, intense finish. Try it alongside some of Bernardini’s favorite pairings, including grilled sirloin, roasted pork belly and fennel, or full-flavored cheeses. Might want to gallop for your share, though. Corsiero Nero Puglia

Our intrepid expert stumbled on this old-vine Nero d’Avola when he entered the gates of Sicily’s “lost village of the vines” (you will not believe how decadent it is for the price). Expect plush dark cherry and sweet spice notes.

Our Italy expert found Tenuta Fenice (‘house of the phoenix’) rising from the rubble of Sicily’s Poggioreale village. This super-rich Sicilian red represents the rebirth of a historic family estate and some of the island’s oldest vines. And you have exclusive U.S. access. In 1968, a devastating earthquake destroyed Poggioreale, forcing residents to flee and winemakers to abandon their vines. Now, Dino Taschetta (below) has returned to his family estate and reignited its legacy with this gorgeous Nero d’Avola. Winemaker Leonardo Palumbo will only put his name on a wine that he’s really happy with. His sumptuous red is made from three top Puglian grapes—Nero di Troia, Negroamaro and Primitivo—and offers delightfully dark, spiced fruit flavors.

From the sun-drenched vineyards of Puglia comes Palumbo, a bold red wine that captures the heart of southern Italy. The region, often nicknamed the stiletto heel of Italy, is known for its rich, characterful reds that seriously over-deliver for their price tag. As Wine Spectator notes, “Italy’s star continues to rise in the wine world, and Puglia is providing some of the fuel for liftoff.”

This wine comes from the highly respected Torrevento estate, where head winemaker Leonardo Palumbo has crafted his share of impressive wines. For this wine, he chose an equal blend of three native grape varieties and called the cuvée ‘Tre Terzi’ or ‘three thirds.’ When he tasted the final wine, Leonardo was so proud of his creation that he gave it his name instead—a longstanding tradition in his family of winemakers. 

It's a smooth, full-fruited blend of Puglia’s best grapes: Nero di Troia for its violet aromas, silky tannins and elegant peppery fruit; Negroamaro for deep color, dark plum and earthy richness; and Primitivo for plum hints and deeper bass notes. They make a perfect ensemble—lots of dark, juicy flavor with ripeness and depth.

Palumbo Puglia

If you haven’t tried the Barbaneras’ sumptuous, barrel-aged Super Tuscan, now’s the perfect time. This delicious blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon brims with luscious black cherry and spice aromas, and plush plum and blackcurrant flavors.

The Barbanera family has done it again. Their sumptuous Super Tuscan red, Vecciano, is truly super in every sense, with ripe black fruit notes and gentle vanilla tones that are near-impossible not to love.
