GSM Wine Origins

GSM blends trace their roots to Southern France, particularly the Southern Rhône Valley. The combination of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre became essential to appellations like Châteauneuf-du-Pape, where blending was historically encouraged to adapt to vintage variation and maximize balance.

Grenache, known for its drought resistance and fruit-forward charm, arrived first in the region. Syrah and Mourvèdre followed, each contributing more robust structure, deeper color and adding to the overall complexity of the blend.

Australia helped popularize the "GSM" label as a way to market the blend, especially in Barossa and McLaren Vale. From there, GSM gained a global following and became a go-to red blend for winemakers in California, Washington and South Africa. In Spain, while Grenache (aka Garnacha) is widely grown, true GSM blends are less common but gaining interest. Today, GSM is appreciated for both its traditional expressions and modern innovations.
