      Wine FAQs

      What is Shiraz / Syrah?

Shiraz (pronounced "shuh-raaz") is a celebrated dark-skinned grape variety known for its versatility, producing wines that range from approachable and fruit-forward to and complex and full-bodied with rich notes of dark chocolate that are ideal for cellaring and developing over time.

In the New World, especially in regions like Australia and South Africa, this grape variety is typically labeled as Shiraz, whereas in Old World regions such as France (its original home), it’s recognized as Syrah. The character of a Shiraz can vary profoundly, shaped by the unique climate and terroir of each vineyard, yielding anything from a robust, spicy profile to a more lush, velvety texture. Although rare, it can also be made into a dessert wine and makes an opulent, sweet treat with concentrated blackberry and chocolate nuances.

Where is the Shiraz/Syrah Grape Grown?

Syrah and Shiraz are the same grape variety, yet they often reveal distinctive personalities based on region and winemaking approach. The most revered expressions of Syrah emerge from the Northern Rhône Valley in France, especially from appellations such as Hermitage, Côte-Rôtie, Cornas and Saint-Joseph. In the Southern Rhône, Syrah frequently plays a crucial role in the sumptuous red blends of Châteauneuf-du-Pape and surrounding areas, adding depth, structure and subtle spice.

New World regions, including California’s Sonoma Coast, Australia’s Yarra Valley, and New Zealand’s Hawke’s Bay, often label their wines as Syrah when they aim to capture the refined, restrained character of the French originals.

Meanwhile, Shiraz is most prominently grown in warmer climates, with Australia leading as the largest producer. The Barossa Valley in South Australia, renowned as the country’s oldest and most prestigious region for Shiraz, showcases this grape with its iconic boldness, concentration and spice.

What is Shiraz / Syrah's Style and Character?

The style and character of Shiraz are profoundly influenced by the climate in which the grapes are cultivated, making it a true reflection of its terroir.

Yet certain hallmark qualities remain consistent across regions. Shiraz is known for its full body, deep color and well-structured tannins, paired with moderate to high acidity. Old World expressions, like those from the Northern Rhône, tend to be quite dry in style—similar to the Cabernet-based blends of Bordeaux—while Shiraz from the New World (like the Barossa Valley) can be less dry than some other reds, such as Cabernet Sauvingon, offering a level of dryness closer to that of an Argentine Malbec.

Fine Shiraz also has excellent aging potential, allowing it to evolve over a decade or more. As it matures, it develops increasingly rich, layered flavors with enhanced notes of spice, leather and dark fruit, making it a superb candidate for long-term cellaring.

What does Shiraz/Syrah Wine Taste Like?

The climate in which Shiraz is grown significantly influences the flavors that develop in the grapes. Shiraz grapes are small, thick-skinned, and packed with intense, concentrated flavors that often include:

      • Ripe plum

      • Cassis

      • Coffee

      • Blueberry

      • Dark chocolate

      • Violet

      • Black pepper

When aged in new oak barrels, Shiraz can also gain layered notes of baking spices like vanilla and anise, alongside more earthy, savory flavors such as old leather, tobacco and sous bois (damp forest floor).

How to Pick a Good Shiraz / Syrah

It’s hard to go wrong with a Shiraz, but certain characteristics based on its region and aging style can help you find the perfect match for your taste preferences.

For those who enjoy complex wines with depth and layered flavors, Shiraz matured in new oak from France is an excellent choice. However, if you prefer a full-bodied Shiraz with bold, jammy dark fruit flavors, a bottle from McLaren Vale or Barossa Valley in South Australia will be ideal.

What Food Pairs Well with Shiraz/Syrah?

With its dark fruit notes and full body, Shiraz pairs beautifully with hearty dishes that offer bold flavors. Enjoy richer Shiraz styles with prime rib, brisket or roasted leg of lamb.

For Shiraz from cooler regions like the Sonoma Coast, try it alongside meat ragùs, stews, mushroom-based dishes and game meats like venison to complement its earthy tones.

It even pairs well with a classic cheeseburger.

      How to Serve Shiraz/Syrah Wine

Shiraz is best served at room temperature, ideally around 68°F.

Decanting the wine about an hour before serving will enhance its rich aromas and flavors.
