Beyond the Label

We’ve been singing the praises of Portuguese wines for years. Why?

Because this sunny, hot and historic wine country (even though it’s best-known for lusciously sweet Port wines) is a wellspring of rich, dry reds that are LONG on flavor and short on price. And when they’re crafted at a hugely acclaimed estate like Casa Santos Lima—named one of the world’s Top 100 Wineries by the World Ranking of Wine & Spirits—you really can’t go wrong.

Amoras hails from their sustainably farmed Lisboa vineyards, which are blessed with cooling coastal breezes and long hours of sunshine. A thicket of blackberry bushes—called amoras—also thrives here, along the perimeter of the vineyards. They help keep hungry birds interested in snacks other than the grapes. Especially useful in 2017, as this vintage’s release went on to scoop a handful of awards, including a major trophy at a top Portuguese competition.

Deep ruby-red in color, Amoras offers up loads of ripe black cherry and baking spice aromas. Red fruits follow on the palate (cherry, raspberry), alongside toasted vanilla from 4 months’ aging in oak barriques. The long finish is savory and smooth. This red is the perfect partner for roasted red meats or barbecued chicken.
