Flavor Profile
If you love Bordeaux, you know the silky, red-fruited wonders of the Left Bank and the bold classics of the Right Bank are both blends of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot predominantly, along with Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and more. But the next bank of great Bordeaux-style reds is California, as NXT BNK Meritage proves deliciously.
While California might be more famous for its varietals (a wine made with a single grape variety), the region’s winemakers have experimented with blending classic Bordeaux varieties for ages. In 1988, a group of California winemakers coined the term “Meritage” (a portmanteau of “merit” and “heritage”) to refer to this style of blend.
That was five years after Bill Knuttel finished his first vintage. For over 30 years, he’s crafted charming California wines using traditional winemaking techniques in an elegant style reminiscent of French classics. He’s the perfect winemaker to realize the potential of California’s Meritage blends.
For NXT BNK, he sourced pristine fruit from a historic family vineyard in California’s lush Lodi region. For the final blend, he used 50% Cabernet Sauvignon to provide a firm backbone and delightfully rich, blackberry flavor; 25% Merlot for plush layers of cherry; and 25% Petit Verdot to round out the blend with deep, dark-fruit notes and spice. It’s classic Bordeaux with all of California’s charm.
Like great Bordeaux, NXT BNK will pair well with a wide variety of food, from grilled meats and stews to roasted veggies and hard cheeses.
