Villa Farnia Pecorino 2018

Villa Farnia Pecorino 2018
Crafted at three-time Winery of the Year Farnese, this fine Pecorino offers up crisp, appealing, orchard-fruit flavors and has a legacy of acclaim, including international trophy wins and a “top pick” nod from Wine Spectator.

Wine Details

Beyond the Label

“These surprises are why I love Italy so.”
– Andrew Jefford

If you’ve never heard of Pecorino (the grape, not the cheese), worry not. Neither had leading wine writer Andrew Jefford until just a couple of years ago. Of an earlier vintage of this white, he said: “Lovely pear and quince scents, with a surprisingly bright and lively palate, packed with luscious fruits.”

Consider the source, and the high praise makes sense: Farnese is a byword for great Italian wine. Based in Abruzzo, this cellar has won more than 80 top accolades in the last eight years, including three Winery of the Year titles from renowned Italian wine critic Luca Maroni. Their approach centers on dedication to rare, local varieties like this Pecorino, combined with top-notch winemaking from the talented Filippo Baccalaro.

You’ll taste the Farnese difference in the glass. In addition to the high praise from Jefford, Decanter judges rated a previous vintage of this delicious white a perfect five stars, commenting: “Soft, floral with pear fruit … faultless production and pretty decent length.” Most recently, it was singled out as a Wine Spectator “top pick under $15.” We’d bestow the same title on this new 2018. Look forward to an appealing apricot, peach, and pear character, framed by lovely floral aromas and a crisp finish.

Pecorino is a rare variety – be the first of your friends to give it a try. Sip this with mature, aged cheeses (including the same-named Pecorino), or with grilled fish or chicken.
