Beyond the Label

Back in the 18th century, it was owned by Marquis de Ségur, who also happened to own Latour and Lafite at the time. Legend has it he once remarked, “I make my wine at Lafite and Latour, but my heart is in Calon.”

Allegedly, this is why a heart has become an icon of the still-family-owned Calon-Ségur, which world-famous critic Robert Parker has said “remains the most faithful to the traditional style of long-lived wines that are slow to evolve and blossom.”

Today, the estate’s vineyards stretch just over 110 acres, planted to a mix of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot that average just under 25 years old.

This release comes from the landmark 2016 vintage, which many of the world’s top critics consider one of (if not the) best vintage of the 20th century so far. Just hitting its stride now, it’s a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 18% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot aged for 20 months in new French oak. It has a perfect 100-point score, as well as many other scores in the high 90s from famous critics (see below).

“Pure liquid velvet, sings of restrained elegance. Inky plum in color, full intensity, with decades ahead of it, signature St-Estèphe power and character. 98 points” – Critic Jane Anson

Extremely limited. First come, first served.

Critical Acclaim:
100 points, Decanter
98 points, James Suckling
98 points, Jane Anson
97 points, Vinous
97 points, Jeb Dunnuck
97 points, The Wine Independent
96 points, Wine Spectator
96 points, The Wine Advocate
96 points, Wine Enthusiast
18/20 points, The Jancis Robinson
