Jaime Quendera is kind of a big deal on the Portuguese winemaking scene, having won over 1,000 gold medals in his 20-year career (not to mention, the prestigious “Best Red Wine in the World” trophy from Vinalies a few years back). He works his magic at Casa Ermelinda Freitas, which Mundus Vini judges named their 2021 “Best Producer from Portugal.” Little wonder he’s the guy behind some of our most popular Portuguese wines.
What makes his latest creation so special? The sandy soils of the Fernando Pó vineyard. Under these arid conditions, vines are forced to root deep into the ground in search of water and nutrients. This stresses the plant just enough so that fewer grapes burst forth. But what do grow are so small and supremely concentrated, they yield a weighty, luscious wine that’s packed with deep, dark fruit flavor. Four months in French and American oak barrels adds just the right amount of baking spice character to complete the delicious picture.
Last vintage, Rocksand earned a haul of critical acclaim—including a Grand Gold from the 2020 Concours Mondial du Bruxelles. And the new release boasts a gold medal from a top Portuguese show. The tasters at UK newspaper, The Independent, are certainly fans, too: “Big, luscious and jammy dark fruit flavors...a long and satisfying finish.”
