Wine FAQs
What is Monastrell Wine?
Monastrell is a bold, full-bodied red wine with flavors of dark fruits, herbs and spice. It’s often blended with other grapes because it offers excellent tannins and structure.
Where is the Monastrell Grape Grown?
Monastrell originated in Valencia, Spain, and is now also grown in France (where it’s known as Mourvèdre) and some parts of Australia and the U.S. (where it’s sometimes called Mataro). The grape has a pivotal role in one of France’s most famous blends—Châteauneuf-du-Pape—and plays an essential part in other red Côtes-du-Rhône wines.
What Does Monastrell Wine Taste Like?
The Monastrell grape produces dense, dark powerful reds as a single-variety wine, and is beloved for its ability to complement other grapes in a blend. Monastrell wines often feature flavors of dark fruit (like blackberries, blueberries and plums), earthy notes (leather, herbs) and sometimes hints of spice, cocoa or smoke. The grape has robust tannins, which makes it ideal for aging, and moderate acidity.
What is Monastrell Wine Similar to?
Monastrell is similar to bold reds like Syrah, Zinfandel, Malbec and Petite Sirah, with intense dark fruit flavors, robust tannins and earthy notes. It complements Grenache blend, providing greater depth of fruit, body and spice.
Is Monastrell the same as Tempranillo?
No, it’s not. While both grapes are widely grown in Spain, they are different grape varieties with different flavor profiles.
Is Monastrell Wine Sweet or Dry?
It is a dry red wine with intense dark fruit, robust tannins and earthy notes.
How to Pair Food with Monastrell Wines
Monastrell pairs beautifully with rich and hearty dishes, such as grilled or roasted meats (think lamb or beef), stews, poultry, dishes featuring olives, aged/hard cheeses and dishes with Mediterranean spices and herbs.
