- 10 Wines for Memorial Day

Dear WSJ Wine fans, we made it! Memorial Day is finally upon us, which means summer is basically on our doorstep, and from here on out, it’s nothing but tan lines, good times and figuring out which wine to uncork next.
Okay, we may be simplifying a little bit…or a lot of bits. But it’s easy to dream when we’ve got so many sunshine-ready bottlings on hand.
From thirst-quenching whites and party-starting sparklers, to favorite reds and large format options perfect for get-togethers, our cellar is packed with selections that’ll ensure this Memorial Day weekend (and the summer ahead) is a delicious one.
As usual, feel free to give us a call or shoot us an email for the lowdown on any and all of the wines in our range. We’d love to hear from you! For now, keep scrolling to discover a few of our top picks to kick off the season.
American Wine for Memorial Day
Let’s not forget, the reason we’re privy to extra time off is to honor those who served in the U.S. Armed Forces. And what better way to do so than by opening some American bottles? Here are our top American-made wines for Memorial Day.
Cooper Point Merlot 2023
This velvety California Merlot is a favorite of Kristina, our American Wine Expert, who’s based in Napa. Medium- to full-bodied with expressive dark fruit aromas to introduce its lush, strawberry-fruited palate, it’s a perfect illustration of the state’s fantastic 2023 vintage. “Many are saying [it’s] a golden year; a vintage to remember,” says Kristina.
Knotwood Sauvignon Blanc 2022
This cool and compelling Sauvignon Blanc hails from Washington’s Yakima Valley, the state’s first officially recognized American Viticultural Area (AVA). With fresh Meyer lemon aromas and a palate of mineral-laden citrus flavors, it definitely goes down easy on a hot day.

Best Bottles for a Barbecue
If Memorial Day is the unofficial start of summer, grilling is the holiday’s unofficial pastime. Here’s what we’d uncork for everything from grilled vegetables to flame-kissed burgers.
J Opi Malbec 2024
A bonafide crowd-pleaser that’s sure to hit the high notes at any BBQ party or picnic, this Memorial Day red delivers plump flavors of ripe plum and bramble berries. Medium-bodied but extra juicy, it’d be a great choice for burgers, ribeye steaks and even grilled portobello mushrooms.
Cabalié 2024
Simplicity at its best, this full-bodied blend of Grenache, Syrah and Carignan has low tannins, low acidity and a ton of fruit flavor, making it a versatile match for anything from grilled zucchini to T-bone steak to turkey burgers. Generously layered, it offers chocolate tones and intense, sun-drenched berry characteristics.
Light Reds for Memorial Day
Love red wine but dread the idea of sipping a go-to blockbuster on a hot day? That’s when light reds come in handy. More delicate in flavor and well-suited to a little chill, light reds are easy-drinking, refreshing pours you can happily swirl all long-weekend long.
w/o Frappato 2023
For being lighter in style, this Sicilian drop sure does pack a punch, offering floral-tinged berry and cherry flavors across a nice long finish. It’s also got pretty cool packaging: Its bottle is crafted from green-tinted, recycled ‘Wild Glass’ sealed with a sustainable cork and has minimal labeling that ensures it’s easy to recycle again, once you’re done.
Purple Owl Pinot Noir 2023
This California Pinot is a great value and consistent bestseller, beloved for its vibrant black cherry and raspberry flavors, and violet nuances. To up its lip-smacking quotient, pop the bottle in the fridge for 20–30 minutes and try it just slightly chilled.
White Wines for Memorial Day
Ready your cooler, people—these whites are absolute must-haves for neighborhood gatherings, beach lounging, overly competitive matches of backyard cornhole or whatever else your Memorial Day weekend brings you.
Casa de Vila Verde 2024
A blend of Loureiro, Arinto, Trajadura and Avesso grapes, this slightly spritzy Portuguese white practically leaps from the glass with aromas and flavors of green apple, Bartlett pear and lime. Its low alcohol, meanwhile, makes it prime for daytime sipping.
Vina Baccana Pinot Grigio 2023
Few wines are as crisp and easy drinking (or as crowd pleasing) as Pinot Grigio, and this one comes straight from the grape’s spiritual home in Italy’s Friuli-Venezia Giulia. You can expect delicate peach and lemon flavors anchored by a mineral core.

Best Rosé for Memorial Day
Nothing says sunshine and leisure time quite like pink wine. So last, but not least, let’s talk rosé. Here are our two favorite rosés for Memorial Day.
Domaine du Mas Ensoleillé Rosé 2024
Made in Provence, France (aka the rosé capital of the world), this Memorial Day wine has the bright spirit of summer built right in: ensoleillé is French for “sunny.” Expect delicate strawberry aromas and a palate of red berry, orange zest and passion fruit flavors.
Field of Stones Marlborough Rosé 2022
Named for the stone-strewn Wairau River Valley from which its grapes were grown, this light-bodied New Zealand rosé clocks in at just 9.5% ABV and offers zippy and ultra-fresh flavors of ripe strawberry, red cherry and citrus along a mineral backbone.
