- 12 Expertly Curated Wines to Gift for Graduation

Find the Perfect Graduation Wine
Whether it’s college, grad school or trade school, graduating is one of life’s greatest achievements and, as for most special occasions, wine makes it even better (for those over 21 years of age, of course). Equal parts meaningful and delicious, the right bottle of wine can make the perfect gift. Below, you’ll find a variety of graduation wine options to make your grad’s special day as bright as their future.

Sparkling Wine
Isn’t there something intrinsically exciting about sparkling wine? There’s a reason horse jockeys and Formula 1 racers open a bottle after winning a race (though we can’t recommend spraying it all over the place like they do!). There’s great bubbly for every graduation celebration—from accessible, affordable options for getting the party started after walking across the stage to fine, age-worthy bottlings to open years down the line
1. Prosecco
Prosecco is the ideal, carefree fizz to pop the day you move that tassel. It’s at its fresh best upon release and, with its bright orchard-fruit flavors and crisp bubbles, makes a delicious toast when congratulating your graduate. Plus, Prosecco makes an excellent base for cocktails!
2. Champagne
This storied French region is home to the world’s most famous bubbly. Here, they use the Traditional Method, the most time-consuming, yet rewarding process for crafting fine sparkling wine. This technique contributes to Champagne’s exceptional aging potential, giving your grad the option to open it on the special day or save it for a future celebration. Compared to the bright, fruit-forward nature of Prosecco, Champagne offers a more refined and layered palate, often featuring notes of citrus, berry, brioche and cream.
3. Crémant
This is a fantastic, great-value alternative to Champagne. Crémant is a category of French sparkling wines made in the same Traditional Method in regions outside Champagne, mostly famously in Alsace, Burgundy, the Loire Valley and Limoux. While Champagne has a stricter aging requirement, Crémant offers a similar flavor profile, though they tend to be fresher and fruitier overall.
White Wine
They might not have the burst of bubbles like a sparkling wine, but an impressive white wine can be the perfect graduation wine, too. Here are a few options to get you started.
1. Sancerre
Sauvignon Blanc is the world’s most popular refreshing, light-bodied white and, if you ask most wine lovers, the very finest come from the Sancerre region in France’s Loire Valley. Sancerre offers leap-from-the-glass aromas of lime, lemon, grapefruit, elderflower and fresh-cut grass, which often continue onto the palate with plenty of tongue-tingling freshness and a trademark minerality or “flinty” note. Most are best enjoyed fresh upon release, but the very highest quality examples can age for 10 years or more. As these elite Sancerre bottlings develop, the flavors evolve, taking on notes of truffle and smoke. Either way, Sancerre makes a fantastic gift if your grad loves light and crisp wines.
2. Napa Chardonnay
On the other hand, Napa Valley is a great place to start your search for the perfect graduation wine if the robed recipient likes their white wine rich and creamy. In Napa, it is common to ferment Chardonnay and age it in oak barrels, which softens the texture and can add buttery, creamy flavors to the wine. The very best examples balance these luscious notes with vibrant acidity and fruity notes of peach, pear or pineapple.
3. White Burgundy
White Burgundy is one of the world’s most sought-after wines, and for good reason—it combines elegance and complexity like few other wines can. Depending on the appellation within Burgundy, these white wines (the vast majority of which are 100% Chardonnay) can range from lean and mineral-driven like those from Chablis, to rich and rounded examples from Meursault and Puligny-Montrachet. Many are ready to enjoy right away, but top-tier examples can age beautifully for a decade or more, gaining depth and nuance over time. For a graduate with a taste for fine wine, white Burgundy is an excellent choice.

Rosé Wine
With its joyful flavors and attractive pink hue, rosé makes a lovely wine for graduation—and there’s no shortage of delicious options.
1. Provence Rosé
The Provence region in southeastern France is the original home of rosé, and their pale classics set the standard for fine pink wine worldwide. These delicate pressings of Grenache, Syrah and Cinsault are deliciously fresh with lovely notes of grapefruit, citrus, berries and wild herbs. They often come in fun, unique bottle shapes, adding to the festivity of a graduation party.
2. New-World Rosé
Provence might be the rosé capital of the world, but some of the best-value pinks are made in regions that you wouldn’t expect, like New Zealand, South Africa or Bordeaux, and offer the same great refreshment and delicate, red-fruit flavors.
3. Sparkling Rosé
What’s more exciting than sparkling wine? How about pink sparkling wine! Enjoy all the refreshing flavors of rosé with frothy bubbles. Because demand is so high, Champagne rosé often commands a very high price. That’s why our top pick is Crémant rosé. These French pink bubblies are made in the same Traditional Method outside Champagne and deliver the same luxurious satisfaction.
Red Wine
Red wine can be a meaningful and versatile graduation gift—perfect for raising a toast or saving for a special milestone down the road.
1. California Cabernet Sauvignon
This bold, full-bodied red is one of America's signature wines and a crowd-pleasing choice for new grads. With flavors of ripe blackberries, plum and baking spice, California Cabernet delivers richness and approachability in a glass. It's great with food or on its own, and most bottles are ready to enjoy now. With many excellent options under $30, California Cabs are an accessible and delicious gift.
2. Pinot Noir
For something lighter, go for Pinot Noir. There are accessible releases from California (Sonoma in particular) that offer juicy flavors of red cherry, strawberry and raspberry. Pinot Noir is also the grape variety used in red Burgundy, which typically start around $30 and climb all the way up to $20,000+. Fantastic offerings can be found at all price points and deliver more nuanced red-fruit flavors and earthy notes. High-quality releases can be cellared for decades, taking on notes of mushrooms, truffle and leather as they age.
3. Brunello di Montalcino
If you want to make a grand gesture, Brunello di Montalcino is a classic fine red that signals tradition, success and timeless elegance. Made from 100% Sangiovese grapes in Tuscany’s hilltop village of Montalcino, Brunello offers powerful flavors of dried cherry, tobacco, leather and spice, with a structure built to age. While they’re already aged five years prior to release, many Brunellos benefit from several additional years of cellaring, making them a symbolic gift for a graduate just beginning their next chapter.

No matter your graduate’s taste or your budget, the right graduation wine bottle can make their celebration even more memorable. Congratulations from all of us at WSJ Wine!
