In the world of Italian wine, Brunello di Montalcino is a titan.
Known for its ability to express its Tuscan terroir with tremendous detail and nuance, Brunello has bold tannins and vibrant acidity that allow it to age gracefully for decades. And yet, with just a brief decant, the best examples offer immediate, deeply fruited drinking pleasure and are sought by critics, collectors and casual drinkers the world over.
Given the Brunello’s reputation, it’d be easy to think all the producers in th region would already be on every wine lover’s radar. But our intrepid Italian wine expert, Leo, uncovered a serious gem not too long ago: Cantine Luciani.
Nestled a mere 330 feet from Biondi-Santi (a Brunello icon whose signature red sells for $250+), this small winery has been owned and operated by the Luciani family since the late 1800s. Today, it’s run by Francesco, the seventh generation, with the help of his parents, Mario and Fabia.
During Leo’s first visit to their property, the Lucianis treated him to a glass of their 2012 vintage. He was immediately captivated by the intensity of fruit and the smoky, floral layers that intertwined in his glass. Then, Mario and Fabia told him about the acclaim. A Very perfect Pairing
Fortunately for all of us, the Luciani family was eager to introduce their wines to a wider audience and they agreed to give Leo a deal at a special, friends-only price.
The customers who got a case of that 2012 Brunello were among the first in the U.S. to try Cantine Luciani’s wines.
None of us were surprised when it was an instant success. “Very elegant and powerful,” glowed one customer review. “Will remain an absolute favorite,” raved another.
