A Super Tuscan Masterpiece
Paolo Masi’s ‘Rifronzoli,’ Tuscany
6 bottles – $239.94 $179.94 ($29.99 per bottle)
12 bottles – $479.88 $335.88 ($27.99 per bottle)
We’ve been working closely with Paolo and Annarita Masi for two decades. When we first met, Paolo had recently graduated at the top of his class from wine college in Florence. His passion for winemaking impressed us no end. Obviously his wine did, too!
Over the years, he’s garnered huge critical acclaim for his classic Tuscan wines. Italy’s top guide, Gambero Rosso, has praised them for their “irreproachably clean fruit and abundant personality.” His characterful wines have captured the hearts of customers along the way, too. He crafts our #1 Chianti of all time and has won thousands of customer favorites clicks and 5-star reviews.
But this release is something different altogether. It’s Paolo’s rarest red yet—and you secure a coveted allocation of each future vintage. “Rifronzoli” is an ancient word in the local Tuscan dialect that refers to the area where the Masi family’s oldest and best Sangiovese vines are located.
The wine is a blend of Sangiovese (from those very vines) and Cabernet Sauvignon that Paolo aged in his finest barrels for 18 months.
When you consider that other fine Super Tuscans like Sassicaia, Ornellaia and Tignanello cost $325, $275 and $185 per bottle (respectively), it becomes clear what superb value you can enjoy by buying from smaller, family-fun estates like Paolo’s.

a special vineyard in the hills of rufina
In the 1990s, Paulo took over the family estate from his father, Renzo. Their beautiful vineyards are perched at up to 1,300 feet above sea level in Rufina (never to be confused with a wellknown, very large Chianti producer called Rufino).
Rufina is the most northerly region of Tuscany and is wonderfully cool, especially at night. Truly ideal conditions for making amazing wine.
Rifronzoli is Paolo’s masterpiece. The first vintage was awarded many ratings of 90+ points, and it keeps on racking up acclaim. But what does the name mean? We’ll let Paolo explain…
“Rifronzoli is the name of the precious rows of vines that supply most of the Sangiovese used in this wine. It’s a typical name in our local dialect. Tuscan farmers commonly named specific areas of their land (like growers do in Burgundy)—and the name was connected with the characteristics of the site.
But, because theyused an old dialect, it is difficult to know the original meaning… we’ve always just referred to this area of vines as Rifronzoli."
