Our California expert, Clare, has a talent for searching out special parcels of wine in California’s top regions. This time, she’s discovered Book of Shadows. Named after the ancient art of tarot, it’s a rich, old-vine Zinfandel from a renowned cellar in Lodi – the spot for premium Zin – and we took the entire lot.
When not making “gorgeous” Zinfandels at “one of the best value wineries in the entire world” (Parker), the winemaker behind Book of Shadows turns his hand to personal projects. To avoid upsetting his bosses, we’ve agreed not to name him – a small price to pay to get a hold of this gold-medal-winning Zin from the Golden State’s fantastic 2017 vintage.
Bewitching aromas of black bramble berry greet the nose, supported by subtle clove, vanilla, and violet. Splashes of Petite Sirah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Tannat add extra depth and complexity to the powerful, dark-fruit core, while time in oak imparts toasty spice and a chocolatey tone to the smooth, silky finish.
