One of our favorite Tuscan winemakers, Paolo Masi, crafted this sumptuous, barrel-aged Syrah-Merlot-Cab for his wife – a culinary maestro who wanted a red that was rich and bold enough to pair with her famous food. Mission (deliciously) accomplished.

Beyond the Label

Tuscan maestro Paolo Masi is one of our most-beloved winemakers from anywhere. His wines are incredible (and win all kinds of international awards and 90+ point scores), and if you’re lucky enough to be invited to dinner at the estate, you’ll be treated to an out-of-this-world feast, prepared by his wife, the lovely Anna Rita.

A few years ago, Anna Rita asked Paolo to craft a wine just for her – something fantastic she could always have on-hand for unexpected guests and big dinner parties. And she had a few notes: It had to be big, rich, and bold enough to stand up to her famous slow-roasted tomato ragù and bistecca alla Fiorentina (Florentine steak).

Paolo went to work, and blended parcels of his best Syrah, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon – grapes he knew thrived in Tuscany’s superb 2015 vintage. After a brief slumber in oak botti, he presented the wine to Anna Rita, who gave it her seal of approval.

We got wind of this special “Anna Rita cuvée” and asked (begged? pleaded?) with Paolo to get a small share sent for our customers. He agreed, but half-jokingly requested we not tell Anna Rita.

In the glass it’s every bit as delicious as you’d expect, bursting with sumptuously ripe red and black fruits, subtle clove and vanilla pod – all framed by a vibrant, earthy, and chocolatey finish. (And yes, it’s perfect for all kinds of classic Italian fare, just as Anna Rita wanted.)

You’ll have to hurry to get your hands on it, though. Paolo was only able to sneak a few cases away ...
