Beyond the Label

We’ve been singing the praises of Portuguese wines for years. Why?

Because this sunny, hot and historic wine country (even though it’s best-known for lusciously sweet Port wines) is a wellspring of rich, dry reds that are LONG on flavor and short on price. And when they’re crafted at a hugely acclaimed estate like Casa Santos Lima—named one of the world’s Top 100 Wineries by the World Ranking of Wine & Spirits—you really can’t go wrong.

Amoras hails from their sustainably farmed Lisboa vineyards, which are blessed with cooling coastal breezes and long hours of sunshine. A thicket of blackberry bushes—called amoras—also thrives here, along the perimeter of the vineyards. They help keep hungry birds interested in snacks other than the grapes.

Last vintage, Amoras won a BIG trophy at a top Portuguese competition, and this new release earned a ‘Best Buy’ rating from Wine Enthusiast. Deep ruby-red in color, it offers up loads of ripe black cherry and baking spice aromas. Red fruits follow on the palate (cherry, raspberry), alongside toasted vanilla from 4 months’ aging in oak barriques. The long finish is savory and smooth. This red is the perfect partner for roasted red meats or barbecued chicken.
