Beyond the Label

A classic Minervois white of fruit, florals and spice, Château Canet Vieilles Vignes Blanc comes to us from a famed 19th-century estate now run by Floris Lemstra and family—and demonstrates just how delicious the whites of this under-the-radar region can be.

Born in Holland, Floris’s passion for wine began in Burgundy, where he worked for nearly two decades producing high-end wines people consider to be an investment, not an any-day-of-the-week option. But in the early 2000s, a trip south to a rural stretch of the Languedoc gave him some new perspective.

Though the area—like all of France—is subject to wine production and labeling regulations, its less prestigious status means winemakers can experiment more stylistically and create wines priced for everyday drinking.

Ultimately, Floris decided this creative freedom (and the diversity of available grape varieties) outweighed Burgundy’s reputation, and in the early 2000s, he and family relocated. They purchased the sprawling 280-acre Château Canet, ringed by olive groves and enchanting pine forests in the Minervois, and have since emerged as one of the area’s leading producers.

Made from some of the estate’s oldest vines (or vieilles vignes), this is a blend of Roussanne and Bourboulenc that delivers an ideal balance of bright grapefruit, rounded pineapple and lush apricot tones woven with floral details. As Floris says, it’s a “vin étiré,” a bottle you’ll be unable to resist finishing once you uncork it.
