Flavor Profile
With a history that dates back to the 17th century, Chatêau Pontet-Canet was classified as a Fifth Growth in 1855. However, in recent years, under the leadership of Alfred Tesseron and Jean-Michel Comme (who retired in 2020), its reputation has soared. Today, it's widely considered to be a “Super Second”—as well as one of the most collectible red wines on Bordeaux’s Left Bank.
In 2010, Pontet-Canet became the Left Bank’s first classified growth to earn organic and biodynamic certifications, a true feat, given the region’s cold and damp maritime climate. Since then, the château has only continued to innovate, using an array of aging vessels beyond the standard French oak barrique. (For vinification, the team uses egg-shaped wooden vessels and sunken qvevri-style clay vats, while part of the wine is aged in clay amphorae.)
In the vineyard, you’ll find 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, all with an average age of 40 years. This mature 2017 is just entering its drinking window, and is highly rated by the world’s top critics (see below).
“The perfume intensity of this wine is remarkable. Firm and velvet at the same time, the tannins are the prelude to the pure, opulent blackberry fruits and balanced acidity. The lines of the wine are clear and direct, a true promise for aging. Drink from 2024.” – Wine Enthusiast
