Flavor Profile
It’s easy to think that Bordeaux is all about top-end wines from fancy châteaux. But the world famous wine region is also full of small, quality-focused estates that produce classically styled bottlings at much friendlier prices. These are some of the area’s most exciting discoveries, case in point: the silky, cherry-layered Château Viel Orme
It’s a classic blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc—from a vintage that just happens to be drinking perfectly right now. The quality shines through with every sip, with elegant red berry fruits, a touch of mint and fine tannins.
The winery responsible for such a bang-for-your-buck bottle lies in the village of Targon, in the heart of Entre-Deux-Mers—a happy hunting ground for savvy Bordeaux drinkers looking for great quality wines at affordable prices. Owned by Laurent Mazeau and his family since 1995, the 18th century châteaux enjoys a privileged location on the hills overlooking the Garonne River and beyond to the famous vineyards of the Médoc.
With so much going for it, it’s no wonder the bottling has caught the eye of the world’s press, with France’s leading wine guide, Le Guide Hachette des Vins, commending its “Elegance from start to finish …exemplary at this price.” And Master of Wine Jancis Robinson remarking how it “nicely splits the difference between classic tannic…and new-wave Bordeaux Lite.”
