Clos de la Vierge is a medium-bodied, dry white wine with peach, wild flowers and citrus aromas. The palate has a rich, weighty texture, balanced by crisp acidity and a balanced, long finish.

Beyond the Label

Nestled between the Pyrenees mountains and the Atlantic Ocean in southern France’s Jurançon region, the Barrère family craft their vibrant flagship white, Clos de la Vierge, with Gros Manseng from their prized “clos” (walled vineyard).

The Jurançon has been renowned since the Middle Ages for its sweet wines. The Wine Advocate noted that region was “undergoing a Copernican revolution, complementing its traditional sweet bottlings with increasing volumes of some of the most exciting dry white wines in the area.” They also reviewed the 2022 vintage of Clos de la Vierge and wrote: “A lively bouquet of white flowers and orchard fruits…balanced and juicy with an enveloping texture and a lively, elegant finish. 90 points.”

Making fine dry whites is nothing new for the Barrère family. Alfred Barrère was one of the pioneers who achieved protected status for “Jurançon Sec” in 1975 (the region’s sweet bottlings were one of France’s first appellated wines). For the last 50 years, his daughters Anne-Marie and Christiane have carried on the tradition. Sadly, Anne-Marie passed away last year, but her indelible style will always be reflected in the wines.

Their vines are planted on a series of steep, sunny hills in curving rows. Alfred planted them in this traditional way back in the 1950s. Besides making for a stunning sight, the unique rows allow for the most sun exposure, which ripens grapes perfectly while the ocean influence locks in a vibrant freshness.

The best comparison? It’s like Burgundy meets Sancerre. (Similar to top Burgundy, the Barrères’ top wine comes from a “clos,” which features their best Gros Menseng.) The 2023 vintage has arrived and is as magical as ever. It’s vibrant gold in color with a mouthfilling richness…peach, apricot and ripe apple, plus subtle wildflower and almond notes, all carried by a zippy current of fresh citrus and minerality.

Delicious on its own and equally good with food. Try it with rich shellfish, roasted chicken or dishes with cream-based sauces.
