Flavor Profile
Here’s one of our most exciting discoveries of the year—maybe the decade. 94561 Inside Track Carignane is a vibrant, complex red that stands apart from your usual California wines, in more ways than one...
An Original California Icon
This elegant Carignane hails from one of California’s most historic estates, with roots dating back to the late 1800s. The winery’s Cabernet ranked well during the famous 1976 Judgment of Paris, in which California wines beat out illustrious, far-pricier Bordeaux wines, cementing its place as one of the world’s most elite estates.
Today, the winery is renowned, in part, for single-vineyard wines which come from some of the top sites around the San Francisco Bay—like this fine red. They recently had a small surplus, as even the very top producers in California are facing unprecedented market challenges. They agreed to share it with our local expert, Kristina, at an incredible price, so long as she signed a non-disclosure agreement. But here’s what else we can say...
Century-old vineyard
The wine is crafted with grapes from the historic Sandy Lane Vineyard, which was planted in 1890! At over 130 years old, the Carignane vines are “still producing fantastic fruit” (Wine Enthusiast), which in turn yields a wine of exceptional depth and flavor intensity.
Sensational value
Under the winery’s label, this elegant Carignane sells for around $40 per bottle. Previous vintages have racked up multiple 90+ point scores and it’s been named an Editor’s Choice by Wine Enthusiast. Under our simpler label, you’ll enjoy the same wine for a much friendlier price.
Remarkable flavor and longevity
Wonderfully fresh and beautifully balanced, this Carignane offers vibrant berry and hibiscus flower aromas plus cocoa and baking spice notes from 10 months’ aging in American oak barrels. The finish is satiny-smooth, with hints of smoked meat and dark chocolate. Decant before serving to let the wine open up, then enjoy it alongside a special meal. Kristina suggests grilled steaks, smoked sausages or wood-fired pizzas.
The winery had limited cases to share with us, so hurry to secure yours.
