Calling all Chardonnay fans:
“This is the closest thing you’ll get to Burgundy’s Chassagne-Montrachet from California soil!”
Our expert on the ground, Clare Tooley, immediately fell in love with this barrel-aged beauty from the talented (and seriously accomplished) Steve McIntyre.
Steve is considered one of California’s foremost viticulturists, and back in the 1970s, actually had a hand in creating the Santa Lucia Highlands appellation (which “produces a stack load of brilliant Chardonnays,” writes The Wine Advocate). So naturally, his estate vines are planted right in the sweet spot of the “SLH” region – a 12-mile stretch of benchland renowned for producing wines of character and complexity. For his Alluvial Shelf release, he hand selected grapes from his best sites and oldest vines. In the cellar, he employed classic Burgundian techniques, including lees stirring (which gives the wine its creamy texture) and aging in French oak barrels (adding smooth spice notes to the ripe, orchard fruit flavors).
Making dynamite wines is only part of Steve’s MO. He’s a pioneer of the green movement and founding member of Sustainability In Practice – and in 2013, he was named “Grower of the Year” by The California Association of Winegrape Growers.
We’re thrilled to share Steve’s classy Chardonnay with you – it’s a wine we really think you should try. But he was only able to send us 300 cases, so you’ll need to be quick!
