Poggio Salvi Brunello di Montalcino 1979
Brunello is one of the world’s finest, most age-worthy reds. The best start hitting their stride at 10 to 20 years of age. But it’s rare to find beautifully mature examples with perfect provenance. Which is what makes this one so very special.
We're sorry, this wine is sold out.

Beyond the Label

Brunello di Montalcino is one of the world’s finest, most age-worthy reds. The best start hitting their stride at 10 to 20 years of age. But it’s rare to find beautifully mature examples with perfect provenance. Which is what makes this one so very special …

Last year, our Italian specialist Leonardo heard about a man working at an ancient property, quietly making some of Montalcino’s longest-lived reds. The estate produced hugely celebrated wines in the 16th century. And when Leo secured a visit to Pierluigi Tagliabue’s Villa Poggio Salvi, he was completely blown away by the quality.

He tasted the 1979 Brunello (Pierluigi’s first vintage) and couldn’t believe how alive, delicious, and complex it was. And it gets better.

Rated three-stars “Outstanding” by Wine & Spirits in 1987: “a deep, velvety nose of cinnamon, tobacco and cedar; mouthfilling flavors of smoky cherry … soft tannins and age provide support and great depth; a haunting, lipsmacking finish. Great for some time to come.”

The time has come to enjoy it –  though Pierluigi says it’ll be great for another decade. Definitely one for the cellar, or your next very special meal.
