Award-winning winemaker Matt Praetzel has connections all throughout California’s Sonoma County (including the premium Russian River Valley sub-region). He recently got a call from one of the Russian River Valley’s top estates, who regularly win 90+ Wine Advocate points for their Chardonnay.
The estate had an extra parcel of Chardonnay in need of a good home, and knowing the quality of their fruit, Matt took the lot. The only condition? That he keep the estate’s name secret to protect their high-price reputation.
Back at his winery, Matt treated the Chardonnay grapes to kid-glove care. A gentle pressing preserved all the ripe-fruited charm of the Russian River Valley’s stellar 2016 vintage, and yielded layers of vibrant yellow plum and golden apple flavors. Light aging in fine oak imparted the opulent mouthfeel and delicate hints of vanilla spice.
