This boutique pink sparkler hails from a seriously famous château, but no, it isn’t in Champagne—it’s Windsor Castle, in the UK! Its strawberry and cream aromas, and fine red-berry-accented bubbles prove it’s time to pay attention to English wine.

Beyond the Label

If you’re a fan of effervescence, we’d love to direct your attention away from France and out of Italy, and over to England—really!—where a growing number of quality-obsessed producers are making sparklers to rival those of Champagne. Windsor Great Park Sparkling Rosé is a lovely pink example, with pretty red berry flavors riding a stream of delicate bubbles.

England's reputation as a sparkling wine producer has soared from laughable to exceptional in just the last two decades.

“English sparkling wine simply goes from strength to strength, scooping up awards and accolades,” reported leading English news publication The Independent. “In the UK, we now make sparklers that are equal to, and in many cases better than, those made in Champagne, while the majority of Proseccos and Cavas are left trailing in their wake.”

And this pink pick is English sparkling’s true ‘crowning’ glory, made with grapes grown at the greatest château of them all: Windsor Castle, the Queen’s country house a short drive west of Buckingham Palace.

Vines were first planted at the property’s Windsor Great Park Vineyard during the 12th century, under the rule of King Henry II, but a working vineyard was never fully established. Some 850 years later, in 2011, Tony Laithwaite was permitted by Prince Philip, The Crown Estate and Royal Farms to revive the ancient vineyard tradition on a small, seven-ish acre, south-facing plot.

While much of the site’s very limited production is dedicated to white sparkling, a small bit of this lovely rosé is made in seven tinier qualities. Opening with a raft of strawberry and cream aromas, it’s palate fizzes with more strawberry tones mingled with bright raspberry, toasty brioche and fine minerality.

We cannot emphasize enough the limited quantity—order right now, today, stop reading and go!
